Are Young Millennial Drivers the Worst Behind the Wheel?
Are Young Millennial Drivers the Worst Behind the Wheel?

Young millennial drivers are the worst behaved drivers, according to a AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study. The report says 88% of young millennial drivers—those ages 19-24—admitted to engaging in at least one risky behavior while driving in the past 30 days. The dangerous behaviors listed in the study are texting while driving, red light running and speeding.

While young millennial drivers led the other age groups in dangerous behaviors, other drivers were not much better. About 79% of drivers ages 25-39 admitted to engaging in risky behaviors behind the wheel, as did 75% of those ages 40-59. Surprisingly, teen drivers ages 16-18 ranked lower for risky behaviors, with only 69% reporting engaging in these dangerous habits.

Some Young Millennial Drivers Find Risky Behaviors Acceptable

Perhaps more alarming than the high rates of risky behavior among drivers in the 19-24 age range is their apathy. Nearly 12% of them said it is acceptable to drive 10 mph over the speed limit in a school zone. Less than 5% of drivers in the other age groups agreed with that sentiment. Further, 14% of young millennial drivers said it is acceptable to drive through a light that just turned red.

“This is an eye-opening study that should help authorities and policymakers determine where to best focus their efforts. If young millennials don’t believe their risky behaviors are truly dangerous, therein lies the deeper problem,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
