Windy Weather Knocks Over Big Rig on Highway 111

Windy weather caused a big rig to overturn on Highway 111 in Palm Springs Monday morning. The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 111 near Overture Drive.

The overturned big rig blocked traffic at the I-10 off-ramp in Whitewater until about noon. Cleanup crews removed 15 gallons of leaked oil from the dirt shoulder.

Why is Windy Weather Dangerous for Trucks?

Windy weather can create serious problems for drivers. Heavy winds are especially dangerous for large trucks, as they are much more difficult to control in such weather. The surface of a big rig’s trailer creates a large “sail area” that can be caught by the wind. The larger the sail area, the more likely a vehicle is to be affected by wind pressure. This can result in a big rig being pushed out of its lane, or worse, overturning.

If you are driving during windy weather, try to steer clear of large trucks and buses, especially if you notice they are driving too fast for conditions.

“We’re relieved no one was seriously hurt in this big rig accident. Please drive carefully during these windy days,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
