Victim of Fatal Rollover Crash on I-10 was not Wearing Seat Belt

An Arizona woman was killed in a fatal rollover crash on I-10 last Monday morning. The accident occurred in the westbound lane near the Cactus City rest area around 10:30 a.m. Police say the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze was traveling west on I-10 when he drifted to the left and traveled down the dirt embankment. The vehicle then rolled over.

The passenger, 94-year-old Leona Mae Burns of Scottsdale, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 74-year-old Mesa man, and another passenger, a 65-year-old Mesa woman, were both taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for moderate injuries.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says neither Burns or the other passenger were wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. The fatal rollover crash remains under CHP investigation.

This is the third fatal I-10 crash near the Coachella Valley in less than a week. On Saturday morning, a Mesa man died in a crash near Eagle Mountain Road. He was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from the vehicle. Last Thursday, a Guatemala resident was killed in a crash with a big rig near Hayfield Road in Chiriaco Summit.

“We’re told over and over that seat belts save lives, yet we constantly see the victims of these fatal crashes were not wearing a seat belt. Don’t let this happen to you or your loved ones—buckle up every time,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
