USC Agrees to $215 Million Settlement Over Doctor Abuse Cases

USC has agreed to a tentative $215 million settlement over a sexual abuse scandal involving one of its former campus doctors. Gynecologist George Tyndall has been accused of misconduct by roughly 500 current and former USC students.

Officials from USC have stated that anyone who was treated by Tyndall for women’s health issues is eligible to be part of the settlement. Those who do not wish to provide additional information about their experience with Tyndall can receive up to $2,500 in compensation. Patients who wish to detail their experience can seek up to $250,000 from the settlement.

More than 400 Lawsuits Could Still Go Forward

The settlement will apply to the federal class-action lawsuit filed against the university. More than 400 other lawsuits have been filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of victims, and it appears likely that many of those plaintiffs will opt out of the settlement and pursue their cases. Attorneys on behalf of some of the plaintiffs have remarked that the settlement was premature, and did not allow for an examination of the university’s handling of the misconduct allegations.

In 2016, Tyndall was placed on leave after an investigation found he had made racist and sexually inappropriate comments to patients. Last year, he reached a deal with USC and left the school.

No criminal charges have yet been filed against the doctor. However, prosecutors are currently considering charges in dozens of cases.

“We are glad that the school has acknowledged the harm done by this doctor and is moving forward with helping victims. However, those victims who wish to pursue their lawsuits in court should certainly do so,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
