Trapped Driver Killed by Big Rig
Trapped Driver Killed by Big Rig

A trapped driver died last year when she was struck by a big rig. After her minivan struck concrete barriers and overturned on I-10 at Jefferson Street, officers rushed to the scene to free the trapped driver. While they worked to free her, a big rig entered the lane, which was blocked off with cones, and struck the minivan with the woman still inside. The minivan was launched about 100 yards, killing the occupant at the scene. Her details have not yet been released.

Police detained the truck driver. According to officers, he claims he did not see the crash site. However, CHP Sgt. Adrian Horta says the closure was clearly blocked off and that traffic was already flowing smoothly for about 20 minutes before the big rig sped into the crash site.

The incident is being investigated as a reckless driving case. Preliminary reports indicate the big rig was going around 50 mph when it struck the minivan. Eastbound I-10 lanes were shut down and drivers were being diverted to Jefferson Street.

Should you find yourself near the scene of an accident, it is important to exercise caution while driving.

Here are some tips for staying safe when you’re driving past the site of a crash:

  • Keep up with the speed of traffic. As long as the accident is not in the lane you’re driving in, you should do your best to drive at a normal speed so you don’t cause more of a traffic backup.
  • Pay attention to the directions of police or emergency personnel on the scene. If an accident is blocking lanes, police will often be there helping direct traffic around the crash. Follow their directions so you remain safe and don’t cause more of a delay.
  • Don’t rubberneck. Everyone wants to know what’s going on at the scene of an accident, but rubbernecking can be very dangerous. Remain focused on the road for your safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.
