Tractor-Trailer Driver Killed in Crash

A tractor-trailer driver was killed after his big rig overturned on I-10 Friday night. Police say 57-year-old Son Pham of El Monte was driving west on the interstate in Desert Center when the truck rolled over. The accident occurred around 11 p.m. east of Eagle Mountain Road.

Firefighters responded to the scene on westbound I-10. They also called on the Riverside County Environmental Health team to clean up a diesel fuel leak. One lane was closed during the clean-up and reopened just before 3 a.m.

Tractor-Trailer Driver: A Dangerous Occupation?

In 2014, about 725 heavy vehicle or tractor-trailer drivers lost their lives on the job. Fatalities in the transportation/material movement industry increased by 3% between 2008 and 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Furthermore, truck driver is one of the deadliest occupations in the U.S.

The factors contributing to truck driver fatalities are complex. For one, more drivers are on the roads due to the increasing demand for goods to be transported—particularly for rapid delivery of online shopping goods. The increase of trucks on the road automatically increases the risk of crashing. Additionally, truck drivers often face long hours and difficult working conditions. These issues lead to an annual turnover rate of roughly 100%. The result is an influx of inexperienced drivers on the road every year.

“The trucking industry needs to undergo significant reform to reduce the dangers associated with driving these vehicles, and sharing the road with them,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
