Toyota Ordered to Pay $242 Million to Family for Gross Negligence

A Dallas family was awarded $242 million in a lawsuit over a car accident that injured their two young children. The Texas jury found that Toyota Motor Corp and Toyota Motor Sales were grossly negligent in the designing and manufacturing of the 2002 Lexus ES 300 sedan involved in the accident. The verdict includes more than $143.6 million in punitive damages.

In September 2016, the Reavis family’s vehicle was rear-ended. Benjamin and Kristi Reavis’ children, ages 5 and 3, were restrained in car seats in the back seat of the vehicle. The children were seriously injured in the collision.

According to the lawsuit, the front seats in the Lexus were unreasonably dangerous. The family’s attorney, Frank Branson, stated that Toyota knew about the problem, yet failed to warn consumers of the danger. He also said the automaker chose to protect front-seat occupants from injuries at the expense of rear-seat passengers.

“Fortunately, the jury ruled in favor of consumer rights by holding this automaker accountable for their negligent actions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
