Three Semis Collide in Fatal Big Rig Crash

One person was killed and two were injured Wednesday in a fatal big rig crash on I-10 near Cabazon on Wednesday. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials said three big rigs collided east of the Main Street exit near the Cabazon Dinosaurs around 11 a.m.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others suffered minor injuries. According to CAL FIRE, 50 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled because of the crash. All but one of the freeway lanes were closed during the clean-up and they all reopened at 3:11 p.m.

Fatal big rig crashes are a growing epidemic in the U.S., taking the lives of 4,000 people every year. These fatal crashes happen roughly 11 times a day, and they increased by more than 18% between 2009 and 2012. Truck accidents also injure more than 100,000 people a year.

With the growth of the trucking industry unlikely to slow down—the American Trucking Association expects overall freight tonnage to increase 23.5% from 2013 to 2015—what can be done about the rise in big rig fatalities?

“Stricter regulations and well-enforced safety standards would be a good start,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “Truck drivers who have a history of unsafe driving or who don’t follow the existing safety regulations should not be allowed to operate these vehicles.”
