Tesla Will Settle Class Action Over Autopilot Problems

Tesla has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over the Autopilot system in its Model S and Model X vehicles. According to the lawsuit, Tesla owners paid extra for the Autopilot software, but the features were “inoperable.”

The lawsuit alleges Tesla misrepresented that the vehicles came equipped with the Autopilot capabilities. However, because of delays in software updates from Tesla, the features were not ready when the company said they would be.

The automaker has agreed to reimburse customers who purchased vehicles with Autopilot. Tesla will pay between $20 and $280 to Tesla owners who bought or leased vehicles with the Autopilot feature between October 2016 and September 2017.

The lawsuit also claimed that Autopilot was “demonstrably dangerous.” However, Tesla’s statement about the settlement did not mention customers’ safety concerns. While Tesla has claimed the use of Autopilot results in 40% fewer crashes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said it has not assessed the system’s effectiveness.

“In theory, Autopilot is a great safety feature. Unfortunately, issues with software updates and a misconception of the system’s capabilities have been problematic,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
