Does Teflon Chemical Cause Cancer?

With evidence linking the Teflon chemical C8 to cancer, Teflon creator DuPont now faces thousands of lawsuits. Last month multimillion-dollar lawsuit against DuPont went to trial in Columbus, Ohio. Kenneth Vigneron Sr., a 56-year-old Washington County man, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997. His lawsuit cites contaminated water from the Little Hocking Water Association as the cause.

What does that water have to do with DuPont? The wells are located upriver of DuPont’s Washington Works Plant near Parkersburg, West Virginia. According to Vigneron’s attorney, the wells were contaminated by C8 particles—the chemical DuPont used to make Teflon—from Washington Works’ discharge pipe. Vigneron alleges that the C8 particles settled on the well fields and contaminated the water.

A scientific panel was created in 2005 to study the effects of the Teflon chemical on humans. The panel affirmed in 2012 that there was a probable link between C8 and testicular and kidney cancers. According to the panel, 0.05 parts per billion of C8 consumed over one year can cause testicular cancer. Vigneron’s attorney claims his client had 226 parts per billion of C8 in his blood after 14 years of consuming water from Little Hocking.

Vigneron’s suit is one of about 3,000 filed against DuPont. The plaintiffs claim the company never told residents about the chemical’s link to cancer until 2012. DuPont lost $5.6 in July to a plaintiff who developed testicular cancer and another $1.6 million to a woman in Athens County with kidney cancer. Beginning next May, federal courts in Columbus, Ohio and Wheeling, West Virginia will begin trying about 270 cancer lawsuits against DuPont.

“With the evidence mounting against DuPont, it’s clear that the company’s carelessness with this dangerous chemical caused many people unnecessary suffering,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
