States Sue Purdue Pharma Over Opioid Marketing

Six states have filed suit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, claiming the company’s deceptive marketing of painkillers has contributed to the opioid crisis. The states involved in the lawsuit are Nevada, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, North Dakota and Tennessee.

The lawsuit alleges that Purdue not only participated in deceptive marketing, but that they also violated consumer protection laws by denying or downplaying the addiction risk associated with prescription painkillers, while overstating their benefits.

This is not the first lawsuit filed against Purdue over deceptive marketing. Sixteen other states and Puerto Rico have all sued the company, and New York, California and Massachusetts are all reportedly planning to file suit as well.

In February, Purdue stated that it had stopped promoting its opioids to physicians. However, the company also denies the accusations about deceptive marketing.

There were more than 42,000 opioid overdose deaths in 2016, according to the CDC. This statistic is five times higher than in 1999. The rate of opioid prescription in the U.S. has tripled since the 1990s. Moreover, one in 15 patients treated with opioids for pain management in U.S. emergency rooms becomes chronically dependent on the drugs.

“The opioid epidemic has deeply affected individuals, families and communities across the country. Companies that have deceptively marketed these drugs and downplayed their devastating side effects should be held responsible for their role in the crisis,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
