Middle Seat Row in Odyssey Minivans Can Shift in Crash

Honda is recalling about 634,000 Odyssey minivans following complaints that the second row of seats might not lock into place. The problem was first reported by vehicle owners six years ago. However, it was not until last year that Honda was able to consistently reproduce the problem and determine the cause.

The problem occurs when the middle row of the minivan slides forward to allow passengers to access the third row. When the second row is returned to its normal position, the seats might not lock into place. The defect can pose a serious risk for injury in the event of a crash.

Honda has received 689 warranty claims for the issue. While Honda claims they have not received reports of injuries, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received complaints about injuries related to the defect. Two owners of 2011 Odyssey minivans told the NHTSA that the second row flipped forward and threw passengers against the front seats, resulting in minor injuries.

Owners of Odyssey Minivans will Receive Recall Info Soon

The recall affects 2011-2016 model year Odyssey minivans. Honda will notify owners of the recall in February. To remedy the defect, dealers will install a bracket and spring to ensure the seat row locks in place.

“We’re glad that Honda is initiating this recall to ensure the safety of back seat passengers,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
