Sandwich Company Sued After Glyphosate Found in “Natural” Products

Sandwich company Pret a Manger is facing two lawsuits over claims that its “natural” food products contain the pesticide glyphosate. The lawsuits have been brought by the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), Beyond Pesticides, and GMO Free USA.

The suits allege that Pret a Manger’s practices are “false and misleading.” According to the OCA, the sandwich company labeled its breads as “natural,” when lab tests found they contained traces of glyphosate. The consumer groups argue that this is deceptive to consumers, and that it is a tactic to sell more and charge higher prices.

What is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is an herbicide and is the active ingredient in the weedkiller Roundup. The compound has been recognized as a “possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Last month, General Mills agreed to remove the “100% Natural” label from its Nature Valley granola bars, after consumer groups including the OCA brought a lawsuit over glyphosate in the products.

“By ensuring that companies are not profiting from misleading marketing, these consumer groups are doing important work on behalf of consumers,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
