Proton Pump Inhibitors Linked to Higher Risk of Death

A new study shows a link between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and higher risk of death. PPIs are heartburn drugs that millions of Americans use everyday. Available over-the-counter and by prescription, the drugs reduce stomach acid, which can help treat ulcers and other acid-related conditions. Common brand-name versions include Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

However, numerous studies have shown that PPIs are linked to health problems such as stomach infections, kidney disease, heart disease and dementia.

Researchers looked at the data of more than 275,000 patients who had been prescribed a PPI. They also tracked more than 70,000 patients taking an H2 blocker (another heartburn drug). The data showed a 25% increased risk of death among patients who took a PPI, compared with those who took H2 blockers.

While the risk is small—there was one extra death for every 500 people taking PPIs for a year—millions of people take these drugs, making it significant. Moreover, the study found a greater risk of death the longer patients stayed on the medication.

More Research Needed on Proton Pump Inhibitors

However, the study is only the first of many needed to determine the true risk of PPIs. Researchers did not analyze the cause of death of those included in the study. The risks associated with PPIs must also be weighed against the benefits, as they can sometimes save patients’ lives.

“We certainly need more research into the long-term effects of using these drugs,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
