Johnson & Johnson Recalls Physiomesh Medical Devices

Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon Inc. has issued a recall of its Physiomesh medical device. The company recalled the product after data analysis revealed that it causes severe side effects and often leads to a higher rate of recurrence and reoperation.

Physiomesh is a medical device made of plastic or polypropylene that is used for abdominal and groin hernia repair. According to data from the Herniamed German Registry and the Danish Hernia Database, the devices have a higher than average rate of recurrence and reoperation following hernia repair.

Several lawsuits against Ethicon and Johnson & Johnson have been filed in response to issues caused by the Physiomesh medical devices. The lawsuits claim that the devices can migrate to other parts of the body, and that materials in Physiomesh can cause infections. They also allege that the mesh can cut human tissue and that it fails to actually fix the problem, leading to hernia recurrences.

Ethicon has faced numerous lawsuits for its vaginal mesh implants, which are also made of polypropylene. According to lawsuits filed by California and Washington State, the company failed to warn patients and doctors of serious health risks and complications that can result from the implants. These issues include chronic inflammation, infections, and the mesh protruding into an organ or through the vaginal wall.

“Once again it appears Ethicon has put a medical device on the market without thoroughly assessing its risks,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
