Pedestrian Killed on Christmas Day in Bermuda Dunes

A pedestrian was killed while crossing the street in Bermuda Dunes early Christmas morning. The fatal accident occurred around 3 a.m. along Avenue 42 just east of Jamaica Sands Drive. Authorities have identified the pedestrian as 36-year-old Ramon Contreras from Indio.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Contreras was in the center divider when he stepped out into the westbound lane of Avenue 42. He was then struck by a westbound Jeep SUV.

Pedestrian was Under the Influence

Officers believe the pedestrian may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The driver was a 55-year-old Palm Desert woman with passengers in her vehicle. The CHP says she pulled over immediately and cooperated with the investigation. The driver was not found to be under the influence at the time of the crash. No one in the vehicle was injured in the crash.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones. Please remember that not only is it dangerous to get behind the wheel when you have been drinking, but it is also dangerous to cross the street under the influence,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
