Passenger Killed in Drunk Driving Crash

One person has died as the result of a drunk driving crash in Desert Hot Springs Tuesday night. Police have identified 22-year-old Jesus Moreno as the victim who was critically injured in the accident. He died from his injuries shortly after the crash.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Ironwood Drive and La Mesa Drive around 8:20 p.m. According to police, 23-year-old Brandon Byars was driving under the influence when he crashed his minivan into another vehicle at the intersection.

Two of Byars’ passengers, including Moreno, were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center. Moreno died just after 9:30 p.m. The other passenger suffered moderate injuries. A man and his three children in the other vehicle all sustained minor injuries in the drunk driving crash. They were all released from the hospital Tuesday.

Police arrested Byars and charged him with drunken driving causing injury. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and will return to court later this month.

“Because he made the decision to drink and drive, this young man will have to live with the permanent consequences of his actions. Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
