A man and his dog were both killed in a New Year’s Day crash on I-10. The fatal crash occurred around 2 a.m. on westbound I-10 near Hayfield Road.

Police say the driver, a 49-year-old Granada Hills man, was traveling in a Hyundai Elantra when he drifted to the right and ran off the road. The vehicle crashed into an embankment, then landed on boulders. It rolled over and came to a stop on its roof. The crash also sparked a brush fire.

Cal Fire responded to the scene and put out the fire. The driver’s identity has not yet been released.

Crash Occurred on Dangerous Stretch of I-10

The area where the accident occurred is a major cause of concern for traffic authorities. The 45-mile stretch of I-10 from Dillon Road to Highway 177. At least 10 people died last year in eight different crashes along this stretch of highway. In 2016, 12 people were killed in 10 crashes.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim. This stretch of highway is notorious for accidents, and improvements are certainly needed to make it safer,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
