Man Arrested for DUI After Crashing Golf Cart in La Quinta

A man was arrested for driving under the influence after he crashed a golf cart, causing a passenger to be ejected. Police say 41-year-old Stephen Southam was driving a golf cart south on Oak Tree when he made an unsafe turn around 2:38 p.m. Southam’s 59-year-old passenger was ejected from the golf cart.

The injured passenger was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital for moderate injuries. La Quinta police arrested the driver of the crashed golf cart for driving under the influence. He was booked at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

Under California’s Vehicle Code, a golf cart is considered to be a vehicle and is thereby subject to the same DUI laws as any other automobile would be. Operating a golf cart while under the influence can, as is clearly shown in this case in La Quinta, pose a risk to public safety.

“Someone who has been drinking has no business operating a golf cart. We hope the passenger who was injured makes a quick recovery,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
