Did You Know? September Is Pedestrian Safety Month

California lawmakers have dedicated the month of September to pedestrian safety. Pedestrian Safety Month will be observed in order to create public awareness of the issue of pedestrian safety and reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian fatalities have risen in recent years and account for 25% of all traffic fatalities.

In 2015, 813 people were killed in pedestrian accidents in California. The Coachella Valley had 10 pedestrian fatalities in 2016.

The pedestrian safety campaign will promote awareness of the issue for both pedestrians and drivers. The campaign will remind pedestrians of important safety tips, like the importance of using crosswalks, as jaywalking has been linked to most of the pedestrian fatalities that occurred this year. It will also be targeted at making motorists aware of the issue and how to make roads safer for pedestrians.

“With pedestrian fatalities on the rise, a month dedicated to awareness for pedestrian safety is a much-needed effort,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
