Jury Awards $1.25 Million Verdict in Pradaxa Bleeding Death Lawsuit
Jury Awards $1.25 Million Verdict in Pradaxa Bleeding Death Lawsuit

Last month, a federal jury in West Virginia awarded $1.25 million to the plaintiff in a wrongful death lawsuit against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (BIPI) over their blood thinner drug, Pradaxa. The suit was brought by the family of a woman who died of severe bleeding, which attorneys argued was caused by using Pradaxa.

Betty Knight, 84, died after suffering a gastrointestinal bleed after taking Pradaxa. The jury found BIPI liable of fraud in the sale and marketing of the drug. They awarded Knight’s two children $50,000 for medical expenses, as well as $200,000 for pain and suffering and $1 million in punitive damages.

Why Was BIPI Liable for Fraud?

The jury found that BIPI was not upfront about the risks associated with taking Pradaxa. According to the plaintiffs’ attorney, BIPI marketed the drug as an alternative to Warfarin by telling patients they did not need to have their blood level checked, when in reality some patients should still be monitored.

BIPI currently faces nearly 3,000 lawsuits over Pradaxa, more than 2,600 of which have been consolidated in Connecticut.

“We’re glad to hear the jury sided with the victim’s family in this case. Hopefully this verdict discourages drug companies from fraudulently marketing their products to patients and doctors,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
