Joshua Tree Rock Climber Dies After Falling 60 Feet

A Joshua Tree rock climber fell to his death Tuesday. According to the Riverside County coroner’s office, 25-year-old Samuel Boldissar of Redondo Beach was climbing Cyclops Rock at Joshua Tree National Park when he fell from the rock formation around 3:45 p.m.

Boldissar was near the top of Cyclops Rock, which is located at the northwest corner of the park, when he fell about 60 feet. Park rangers and sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident. The Joshua Tree rock climber was pronounced dead at 4:44 p.m.

Joshua Tree Rock Climber Fell from Popular Climbing Site

According to the investigation, the victim fell due to gear failure or because the gear was not properly secured. Boldissar was climbing with three or four others, who described him as a beginner rock climber. The Joshua Tree National Park spokesman says Cyclops Rock is a popular route for climbers.

Second Climber Falls at Joshua Tree, Suffering Injuries

Another rock climber fell at the same park Saturday. Firefighters rescued a 69-year-old Wyoming man from the Hidden Valley Area of the park. He apparently fell about 25 feet and landed on a rock ledge. He was airlifted from the ledge and transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Rock climbing is a popular activity this time of year, but it is one that requires skill and practice. According to the Joshua Tree National Park website, the logistics involved in a rescue should you get injured are extensive. A rescue could potentially take several hours, depending on where you are. Climbers should always be prepared with extra water, clothing, food and first aid supplies. The park service recommends climbers always wear a helmet and climb with at least one other person. Climbers assume total responsibility for their safety while visiting the park.

“We’re so sorry to hear about this tragic accident. Inexperienced climbers should be very cautious and stick to less difficult routes to avoid dangerous situations,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
