Johnson & Johnson Loses $417 Million in First California Talcum Powder Case

Johnson & Johnson has lost its first California talcum powder case. The company was ordered to pay $417 million to 62-year-old Eva Echevarria, after a Los Angeles jury found J&J and its consumer-products unit liable for failing to warn the plaintiff of the risks of its talc products.

California Talcum Powder Case is J&J’s 5th Loss

J&J has lost four previous verdicts in St. Louis, totalling $300 million. The Los Angeles trial is the first trial before a state jury outside of Missouri, and J&J currently faces 5,500 claims in the U.S.

Echevarria began using talcum powder when she was 11 years old. In 2007, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Following the verdict, Echevarria’s attorney stated that J&J should begin warning women about the risks of its talcum powder immediately.

J&J Claims Powder Products are Safe

However, J&J continues to deny the correlation between talc and ovarian cancer. The New Jersey-based company says it plans to appeal this California talcum powder case. The company’s spokesperson has said they continue to defend Johnson’s Baby Powder as a safe product.
