Hundreds Sickened by McDonald’s Salad Parasite Outbreak

Nearly 400 people have been sickened by McDonald’s salads over the past few weeks. There have been 16 hospitalizations associated with the outbreak. The illnesses are due to a parasite called Cyclospora, which is found in contaminated food or water. When ingested, it can cause a short-term illness called Cyclosporiasis.

Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis

Once Cyclospora is in a person’s system, the symptoms of the illness can take up to two weeks to manifest. Symptoms of the infection include diarrhea, low-grade fever, nausea, cramping and tiredness. Children and people with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of complications from Cyclosporiasis. The illness is generally treated with antibiotics and rehydration.

The FDA says the number of illnesses will likely worsen before it improves because of the time it takes for the infections to manifest.
