Hoverboards Send Thousands of Kids to Emergency Room

Since hoverboards were introduced a few years ago, more than 26,000 kids have been admitted to emergency rooms with injuries related to the devices. When hoverboards first came onto the market, batteries overheating and causing fires were a major concern. Many models were recalled due to the fire hazard. However, it turns out that falls were the main cause of injuries related to hoverboards.

While they look like fun, especially to children and adolescents, hoverboards are actually quite difficult to ride. They have a low center of gravity, which increases the risk of falls, and requires the rider to be able to balance well.

According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics, 26,854 hoverboard injuries in children under age 18 were treated in U.S. emergency rooms between 2015 and 2016. Boys accounted for 52% of cases, with 12-year-old boys suffering the highest number of hoverboard injuries. The most common injuries were to the wrist, forearms and head. Fractures accounted for 40% of emergency room visits, followed by contusions and sprains and strains. Distraction by a phone or music was cited as a common reason for falls from hoverboards.

“Riding a hoverboard might be appealing to your child, but it can actually be very dangerous. If you choose to allow your child to use a hoverboard, ensure they always wear a helmet and other appropriate safety gear, and never allow them to ride one while distracted by a phone or other device,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
