House Panel Approves Proposal for Self-Driving Cars

In an effort to curb the rise in traffic deaths, a U.S. House panel has approved a proposal to allow automakers to deploy 100,000 self-driving cars without meeting the current auto safety standards. The proposal also prevents states from imposing rules on self-driving vehicles. If the proposal is approved by the full committee next week, the House of Representatives will consider it in September.

The goal of the proposal is to speed up the process of getting self-driving cars on the market. If approved, automakers will have to prove their vehicles function as intended and contain fail safe features. States will still be able to control registration, licensing, liability, insurance and safety inspections. However, states will lose the ability to set performance standards for self-driving vehicles.

California is Becoming More Friendly for Self-Driving Cars

Currently, most states have not enacted regulations legislation regarding self-driving cars. However, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued regulations for the testing and deployment of self-driving vehicles. For the past few years, the state has struggled with finding the correct balance between innovation and public safety. The legislation approved this year makes California’s roads much more friendly to self-driving cars.

“We still have quite a ways to go before self-driving cars are a safe option on the roadways. We hope new federal regulations will help spur technological advancements while also ensuring public safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
