Healthcare Reform: Bribes Must be Disclosed

Healthcare Reform: Bribes Must be Disclosed

California law requires that drug companies reveal payments made to doctors. Of course, these payments can influence a doctor’s decision about what drugs to prescribe.

Pfizer Inc. has admitted that it gave doctors and hospitals a total of $34 million in the first half of 2009 for speaking and doing studies on behalf of the company.

Wyeth, a subsidiary of Pfizer, was also found to have ghost written dozens of medical articles that minimized the breast cancer risk and exaggerated the benefits of hormone therapy. Wyeth then had the articles published in medical journals under independent doctors’ names.

Studies now confirm that 200,000 women would not have suffered breast cancer, but for their use of hormone therapy drugs. While laudable Big Pharma has to disclose this information, it is frightening to think about the use of their unlimited financial resources to throw elections.
