How to File a Claim After a Hit-and-Run

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Adelanto Thursday night. The pedestrian crash occurred around 11:22 p.m. near Bellflower Street and Wildfire Way.

Sheriff’s officials say the pedestrian was crossing the street using the crosswalk. He was then struck by a gray sedan traveling north on Bellflower Street. The driver continued on Bellflower without stopping. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital for injuries to his knee and ankle. Police are still searching for the suspect. Anyone with information should contact the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station at (760) 552-6800.

Seeking Compensation After a Hit-and-Run

In California, all drivers are required by law to stop immediately after being involved in a crash that has resulted in the death or injury of another person. They are also required to cooperate with police, and to do what they can to assist the injured person. A hit-and-run is a serious offense, and can result in jail time and significant fines.

If the suspect is caught, the hit-and-run victim can file a lawsuit against the driver to seek compensation for their damages. Unfortunately, hit-and-run suspects are not always caught. This leaves victims with less options for seeking compensation for their injuries. If the hit-and-run driver who injured you is not found, you will likely have to file a claim with your own insurance company. Your uninsured motorist coverage can be used to cover damages caused by a hit-and-run driver who cannot be found.

“We hope police are able to catch the hit-and-run suspect that injured this pedestrian in Adelanto,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
