Fiery Big Rig Crash Shuts Down Northbound I-15

Police issued a SIG Alert after a fiery big rig crash shut down northbound I-15 for more than five hours Thursday morning. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a tractor-trailer rear-ended a pickup truck hauling a trailer around 4 a.m. near Dale Evans Parkway. Both trucks then caught fire.

The 2017 Freightliner was headed north at about 75 mph when it struck the 2000 Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck, which was hauling a fifth-wheel trailer. A witness says the Freightliner driver failed to slow down when northbound traffic slowed, causing the crash.

After hitting the pickup truck, the big rig struck the concrete wall in the center median. The Freightliner then went up in flames. The pickup truck driver, a 64-year-old Glendora man, pulled over on the right shoulder. His trailer then become fully engulfed in flames. Police say the trailer was carrying a race car and racing fuel.

San Bernardino County Fire and the Apple Valley Fire Protection District both responded to the scene. They promptly put out both fires. However, the freeway remained closed for several hours while crews cleaned up the debris, including spilled racing fuel.

“It’s a miracle no one was seriously hurt in this fiery big rig crash. This is an important reminder to always pay attention to changing speeds on the freeway. Taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds can result in a devastating crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
