Faulty Brakes Cause Overturned Semi Accident

An overturned semi shut down a stretch of State Route 18 last Wednesday. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a tractor-trailer carrying 20,000 pounds of peaches went over the side of the roadway at mile marker 64, landing on its roof.

Officials say the truck driver had an issue with the brakes, causing him to lose control. The driver was airlifted to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Traffic was stalled in both directions from Shamrock Road to Baldwin Lake for an hour while the overturned semi was pulled back to the road and the scene was cleared.

In 2014, 111,000 people were injured in crashes with large trucks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Nearly 90% of large truck crashes are either caused or made worse by human error, and driver fatigue is a contributor to about 30% of commercial truck crashes.

“We’re praying for the driver’s recovery. This two-lane roadway is especially hazardous for large trucks,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
