Fatal Highway Crash Victim Was Not Wearing Seat Belt

A Victorville man died in a highway crash in Hesperia Tuesday morning. Andres Perez, a 62-year-old from Victorville, was driving a Nissan 300 ZX northbound on I-15 when he apparently veered off the roadway and struck a flashing yellow light signal pole on the off-ramp to Highway 395. The fatal crash was reported around 5:15 am. Tuesday, but San Bernardino County Fire Department officials believe the crash may have occurred several hours earlier.

Authorities say Perez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the fatal highway crash. There were no reported witnesses to the crash, and it was discovered by passerby when the sun came up. The CHP is asking for anyone who might have witnessed the crash or who might have information about it to contact the Victorville CHP office at (760) 241-1186.

Seat belts are the most effective way to reduce the risk of death in an auto accident. Proper seat belt use has saved nearly 300,000 lives in the U.S. since 1975, the year automatic seat belts were first made available in commercial cars. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, proper use of a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45% and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%.

“The evidence that seat belts save lives is undeniable. It’s tragic that so many people continue to drive without strapping themselves in,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
