Do E-Cigarette Flavors Produce Toxic Vapors?

Flavored e-cigarette liquids can produce dangerous levels of toxic vapors, according to a study by Desert Research Institute in Nevada. Although e-cigarettes are marketed as a healthier alternative to cigarettes, this new research reveals that smoking e-cigarettes with flavoring compounds produces high levels of carcinogenic chemicals including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein.

The toxins are produced through “thermal decomposition” of the flavoring compounds that occurs when they are rapidly heated to create vapor. While the flavoring liquids themselves are not necessarily toxic, the vapor produced by smoking them surpasses the exposure limit recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

The study showed that the higher the level of flavor in the e-cigarette liquids, the more toxins it produced. Unflavored vapors produced a much smaller amount of toxic vapors than the flavored ones.

“Companies jumped the gun in touting e-cigarettes as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. They might be less harmful than cigarettes, but that does not by default make them safe or healthy. There is still much research to be done to determine the long-term effects of e-cigarettes,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
