Drivers Complain About Unintended Acceleration Problem in Tesla Vehicles

In 2014, Bhavana Patel was parking her Tesla Model S in Bakersfield when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The Tesla jumped the curb and crashed into a restaurant. Fortunately, no one was hurt. But the incident was just the first of many claims that Tesla vehicles can suddenly accelerate.

It happened again this month, this time in Phoenix. A Tesla Model X jumped a curb and crashed through the front window of a chiropractor’s office. The next day, a complaint was filed in Phoenix to the NHTSA, claiming that a 2017 Model X accelerated by itself and jumped a curb. The NHTSA does not post the names of people who file complaints, but the description of the crash in the report matches with the news story of the accident.

There have been several more complaints filed describing similar issues with Tesla vehicles. Most of them describe the vehicle accelerating as the driver was attempting to park. In most of the cases, the drivers were not given much information from the automaker.

What is Causing Unintended Acceleration?

While automakers usually place the blame on drivers for mistaking the gas pedal for the brake, some engineers suggest that the problem could actually be related to glitches in the vehicles’ computers. This was true for Honda, which recalled 175,000 vehicles in Japan for an electrical glitch that could cause unintended acceleration in 2014. The same year, Toyota paid around $1 billion to settle a criminal investigation into claims of its vehicles unintentionally accelerating.

“This is a very dangerous defect that could end up hurting people, and it is time for Tesla to acknowledge there is a problem,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
