Is Distraction Responsible for Spike in Pedestrian Deaths?

Distraction is a significant contributor to the increase in pedestrian deaths nationwide. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, the U.S. has experienced an 11% increase in pedestrian fatalities from 2015 to 2016. This year, pedestrian deaths have continued to rise.

Statistics show distraction has been the largest factor contributing to the rise in pedestrian deaths. We know driver distraction is a big part of this problem. However, another component is distracted pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, distracted walking caused 11,000 injuries between 2000 and 2011. However, it is unclear how many deaths are caused by distracted walking.

Safety Apps can Help Reduce Distraction

The fact remains that both drivers and pedestrians must eliminate distractions to improve pedestrian safety. One way drivers can do this is by installing safety apps on their devices that block transmissions and notifications when the user is driving.

Fortunately, there are also apps that help prevent pedestrians from distracted walking. For instance, Walking Text uses your smartphone’s camera to create a transparent background while you text. That way, you can at least see what’s ahead of you if you are typing and walking. Another pedestrian safety app is Safe & Sound, which automatically turns down the user’s headphone volume when GPS detects you are near a road.

“These apps are great tools to help prevent distractions for drivers and pedestrians. Of course, there is no substitute for common sense and self control when it comes to eliminating distractions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
