Coachella Drunk Driver Hits Palm Tree, Flips Car

A Coachella man suffered serious injuries after he ran his vehicle into a palm tree in a drunk driving accident in March last year. The crash flipped the vehicle onto its side.

Police say 28-year-old Mario Gonzalez Mulato was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he crashed. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Harrison Street near Calle Verde. The palm tree he struck was in the road’s center median. Mulato was taken to the hospital following the crash. He was later charged with driving under the influence.

Impaired Drivers Often the Victims of DUI Fatalities

This car accident is just one in what seems to be a never-ending string of DUI-involved accidents in the valley. Fortunately, the driver’s life was spared in this incident. Considering that two-thirds of all fatalities in alcohol-impaired car accidents occur among the impaired drivers themselves, Mulato was lucky to make it out alive. In 2010, alcohol-involved crashes resulted in 13,323 fatalities and 430,000 nonfatal injuries.

“With all the research available on the subject, there’s simply no excuse for driving under the influence. Not only is it an endangerment to others, but there’s a high likelihood that any fatalities resulting will include you as the driver,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
