Can Mirena Cause Stillbirth?

Another Mirena lawsuit has been filed against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, this time alleging the device can cause stillbirth. Abigail Lane of Georgia has filed a wrongful death suit against the company, claiming her son was stillborn in 2013 because of the Mirena birth control device.

Lane alleges that when she had the Mirena device implanted in 2009 she was not properly informed of the risks associated with the device, including the chance of miscarriage and stillbirth. Her lawsuit also claims that the design of the device is defective, as the T-shaped arms can embed into the patient’s uterine wall. Once embedded, it might be impossible for a physician to remove should the patient become pregnant.

The lawsuit alleges that the device poses a danger to the fetus should it fail to prevent pregnancy. In Lane’s case, the IUD caused an intrauterine infection, which led to the death of her unborn child.

“If a device has the potential to cause harm to an unborn child, these risks need to be communicated to the patient,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
