Apple Valley police took a driver into custody early this month after he led them on a pursuit and rammed a police car with his vehicle. Deputies spotted the driver of an older model Nissan pickup truck with paper license plates on westbound Bear Valley Road and attempted to stop him around 4:20 a.m.

Police say the driver made an abrupt lane change when they attempted to pull him over. He then passed vehicles in the center turn lane and lead police on a pursuit. The chase spanned Apple Valley through Hesperia and ended in Lucerne Valley.

The suspect, 23-year-old Matthew Martinez, rammed a police car during the chase. Another deputy used his patrol car to disable the suspect’s vehicle. He was then taken into custody. Both deputies were unharmed in the incident.

Martinez is being held at the High Desert Detention Center on $100,000 bail and will appear in court Monday.

“We’re thankful the deputies involved in this incident were not injured. There’s no excuse for this type of reckless driving and disregard for others’ safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
