Alcohol Monitoring Technology Has Kept Half a Million Users Sober

The world’s first transdermal alcohol monitoring device created by Alcohol Monitoring Systems (AMS) in Colorado has officially monitored 500,000 people to prevent drunk driving. The system, known as SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM CAM), is an ankle bracelet that tests the wearer’s perspiration every 30 minutes for traces of alcohol. The system was launched in 2003 by Jeff Hawthorne, an engineer who lost a college friend in a drunk driving crash.

The SCRAM CAM system is usually used to monitor repeat drunk drivers to ensure they are following the conditions of their probation or bond. According to the data, 99.4% of the system’s users are completely sober and compliant while using the device.

According to AMS CEO Mike Iams, besides keeping users sober throughout their probation period, the technology also often has a positive long-term effect on them. Users and their family members frequently report that the device helped them stay sober long term and turn their lives around.

“The effectiveness of this alcohol monitoring technology is truly amazing. We hope to see AMS devices used more frequently to help fight the drunk driving problem on our roadways,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
