Adhering to Auto Recalls Can Prevent Tragedies

In March, a man died trying to rescue his daughter from a pond at an apartment complex in Indiana. The man had left his 2008 Pontiac G6 running while he got out of the vehicle to talk to someone. His 3-year-old daughter was in the vehicle, and she knocked the gear shift out of park. The car then reversed into the pond with the child inside. The girls’ father jumped in to save her, but he did not survive.

In 2014, the man’s Pontiac G6 was recalled for a circuit problem that could allow the gear shift to move out of park without the brake being applied. There is no record of the recall repair having been performed on the vehicle involved in the incident.

One-Third of Vehicles have Unrepaired Recalls

And this is not an uncommon occurrence. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that one-third of vehicles on the road have unrepaired recalls. Recalls are issued either because of a safety defect or a violation of federal standards. Although not every single vehicle with a recall will have a problem manifest, vehicle owners should never ignore recalls. It is best to contact the dealership as soon as you receive a recall notice, and schedule your repair as soon as possible.

“Ignoring auto recalls can lead to devastating accidents and injuries. Consumers should always take recalls seriously, even if they have not yet experienced a problem with their vehicle,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
