7 Tips for Preventing Christmas Tree Fires
7 Tips for Preventing Christmas Tree Fires

Nothing says “Christmas” quite like a live Christmas tree. Unfortunately, Christmas tree fires result in $13 million in property damage every year. These fires also present a serious risk to you and anyone else in your home.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to forfeit your Christmas tree tradition. These fires are usually preventable as long as you follow some basic safety precautions.

Here are 7 rules for preventing Christmas tree fires:

  1. Always pick out a fresh tree with vibrant needles that don’t easily come off. Trees that shed easily are more dried out and more likely to catch fire.
  2. Display your tree away from heat sources including fireplaces, radiators, heat vents and candles.
  3. Keep the tree base filled with water to keep your tree from drying out.
  4. Make sure your Christmas lights have been tested for safety, and dispose of any damaged lights.
  5. Turn your lights off when you go to bed for the night and any time you leave the house.
  6. Dispose of your tree safely and in a timely manner. If the needles are beginning to drop off, it’s time to throw it out.
  7. Dispose of your tree by leaving it for curbside trash pickup, dropping it at a recycling center or putting it in your yard waste container for pickup. Never use the tree in your home fireplace. Christmas trees burn explosively and should never be used as firewood.
