7 Tips for Pedestrian Safety

A Hesperia teenager was hospitalized last Friday after being hit by a car while running across the street, proving that reminders about pedestrian safety are always timely. Witnesses say the Sultana High School girl was rushing to cross Main Street east of G Avenue with a group of friends at around 3 p.m. when she was hit by a 2004 Ford vehicle.

The girl was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for unknown injuries. According to witnesses, the girl was not in a crosswalk and the driver was unable to brake in time. The driver immediately stopped and tried to help the victim while they awaited first responders. The accident shut down eastbound Main Street at G Avenue for two hours.

In 2013, more than 150,000 pedestrians in the U.S. were treated in emergency departments after being hit by a car, according to the CDC. The risk of pedestrian death increases in urban areas in non-intersection locations.

It’s crucial to practice safe pedestrian habits to avoid being in an accident. While some things are out of your control, there are several smart behaviors you can implement to keep yourself safe while walking. Here are 7 important tips for pedestrian safety:

  1. Always walk on the sidewalk if there is one available. If not, always walk facing traffic.
  2. Never assume a vehicle is going to stop for you.
  3. Always cross at crosswalks or intersections if possible.
  4. Always walk sober.
  5. Obey traffic signals, even if it looks like the coast is clear.
  6. Always look before you cross the street, even if traffic signals indicate that it’s safe.
  7. Don’t use a cell phone or headphones while crossing the street.
