60 Drivers Cited in 7 Hours For Endangering Pedestrians

The Palm Desert sheriff’s station put on a pedestrian safety enforcement operation last Wednesday to raise awareness for creating safe roads for pedestrians. Deputy Steve Nelson from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department dressed up as Captain America and spent the day walking the busy intersections of Palm Desert.

Special patrols from the department joined Nelson in an effort to point out traffic violations from both drivers and pedestrians, focusing on the city’s main problem areas for traffic offenses.

Captain America and the patrolling officers spent seven hours on the operation and cited 60 drivers for traffic violations, half of which were failure to yield to pedestrians. They also cited three pedestrians for jaywalking.

The pedestrian safety enforcement operation sent a crucial message to the citizens of Palm Desert: being safe on the road is vital for drivers and pedestrians alike. Driving violations the officers noticed included speeding, failure to stop before a crosswalk and not giving pedestrians the right of way. They also stopped several pedestrians to remind them to do their part in ensuring their safety, like using marked crosswalks, paying attention to their surroundings when they’re crossing the street, and making eye contact with drivers.

“It’s great that Palm Desert is taking steps to curb pedestrian accidents. The Palm Desert sheriff’s department is setting a great example that other cities would be wise to follow,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
