5 Factors that Lead to Rollover Crashes

A driver was airlifted after he was injured in a rollover crash in Hesperia Tuesday. The driver crashed his vehicle on Sultana Avenue near Santa Fe Avenue around 1:40 p.m. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Police say two people were hurt in the rollover crash. One of the victims, a 59-year-old man, was taken to the Hesperia Airport, then airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with unknown injuries. The other victim suffered “delayed injuries” and his status is unknown.

Rollover crashes are complex accidents, and they have a higher rate of fatality than other types of crashes. Rollover crashes accounted for about 35% of all deaths from passenger vehicle crashes.

What causes these types of crashes? There are several factors that can lead to a rollover crash, including:

  1. Vehicle type: Taller, narrower vehicles like SUVs, pickup trucks and vans are more susceptible to rolling over. However, any vehicle can end up rolling over in a crash.
  2. Speed: Fatal rollover crashes are more likely to involve speeding than are other types of fatal crashes. Around 40% of fatal rollover crashes involve a vehicle traveling at excessive speeds.
  3. Alcohol: About half of all fatal rollover crashes involve a driver who is under the influence.
  4. Rural roads and high speed limits: Nearly 75% of fatal rollover crashes occur in rural areas. These roads usually have a posted speed limit of 55 mph or higher.
  5. One involved vehicle: Nearly 85% of fatal rollover crashes are single-vehicle crashes. This statistic indicates that driver behavior, such as distraction and impairment, plays a big role in rollover crashes.

“Rollover crashes are extremely dangerous, and they happen far too often on our desert roadways. Drivers need to be attentive and avoid dangerous behaviors that contribute to these deadly crashes,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
