The Stats: More July 4th Weekend Crashes this Year

July 4th weekend crashes and DUIs rose in 2016, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Over the long weekend, CHP officers responded to 16 crashes, one being fatal, and arrested 19 people on suspicion of DUI.

The weekend’s numbers are up from 2015, when the CHP reported 10 collisions—one that was fatal—and 10 DUI arrests. However, last year’s enforcement period was 24 hours shorter due to July 4th falling on a Sunday. This year, the CHP operated with a maximum enforcement period from Friday evening to noon on Monday. July 4th weekend crashes have increased both years since 2014; that year there were only nine crashes, none of which were fatal.

“This year’s numbers indicate the need for continued education and prevention of driving under the influence,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
