Woman Commits Hit-and-Run Under the Influence

Police arrested a woman in La Quinta for hit-and-run under the influence Friday evening. According to the La Quinta Police Department, 45-year-old Kelly Campbell of Seal Beach crashed into another vehicle on North Washington Street near Avenue 47 around 5:10 p.m. Campbell then fled the scene. Fortunately, no one in the other vehicle suffered injuries.

Police stopped the hit-and-run suspect at Washington Street and Highway 111. After a search and investigation, they determined Campbell was driving under the influence of narcotics. Police also found heroin and prescription narcotics in her possession. They booked Campbell at Riverside County Jail. Police charged her with driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and possession of narcotics and paraphernalia.

10 Million Drivers Admit to Drugged Driving

The 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that 10 million people reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Another study shows that nearly half of drivers who tested positive for drugs were on a prescription drug. Pain killers were the most common prescription drugs found. Another 37% tested positive for marijuana, and 10% were on cocaine.

The actual number of crashes caused by drugged driving is hard to determine. Oftentimes, drivers who are under the influence of drugs are also drunk. In this case, police officers are unlikely to perform a drug test on top of a drunk driving test. Additionally, there is still not a reliable roadside drug level test available.

“Committing a hit-and-run under the influence is a serious offense that threatens public safety. This driver should never have been behind the wheel under these conditions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
