Will Speed Limiters Reduce Auto Injuries and Fatalities?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has proposed that speed limiters be required on heavy trucks. The agencies released a statement proposing the maximum speed be set somewhere between 60 and 68 MPH. They will be seeking public input before determining the exact number.

The speed limiters would physically keep vehicles from going over the maximum speed and would be applied to vehicles with a gross weight of more than 26,000 lbs. If put into effect, the rule would apply to trucks, buses, school buses, multipurpose passenger vehicles and commercial motor vehicles.

The proposal suggests that based on crash data, speed limiters would reduce the severity of crashes and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities from crashes.

“With the sheer number of truck accidents we experience on our roadways, many of them causing injury or death, speed limiters are a welcome solution,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
