Are You Wearing the Right Gear for a Moped Collision?

A moped collision closed down part of Perez Road Tuesday afternoon. Police say the moped rider veered out of his lane and hit a parked car. The man sustained a head injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Perez Road was partially closed east of Cathedral Canyon Drive while police investigated the incident.

According to the Cathedra City Police Department, the moped rider was not wearing the proper helmet for his vehicle. He was apparently wearing a bicycle helmet.

Moped riding can be a budget-savvy way to get from A to B, but as with riding a motorcycle, you have to make sure you’re wearing the proper gear in case of a moped collision. The following is a list of appropriate protective gear for riding a moped:

  1. Appropriate helmet. The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) requires moped riders to wear helmets specifically designed for mopeds or motorcycles that comply with current safety standards. To see if your helmet is compliant with Department of Transportation safety standards, you can look it up at http://www.helmetcheck.org/.
  2. Protective jacket and pants. Your moped might not zip around as quickly as a motorcycle does, but a spill at 30 mph will still hurt. Wear a leather jacket at the very least, but chaps or reinforced denim for pants is a smart idea for protecting your legs as well.
  3. Gloves. Wearing gloves is important for keeping a good grip on the handlebars and controls, and they’ll also protect your hands in case of a fall.
  4. Protective shoes. You don’t necessarily have to wear boots, but your shoes should have good traction and oil-resistant soles.

“Wearing the appropriate gear for your method of transportation is crucial for remaining safe on the road,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
