Viberzi Could Cause Pancreatitis in Some Patients

The prescription drug Viberzi was introduced to the market in 2015 as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea. However, the drug has been linked to serious and even fatal cases of pancreatitis. The FDA has issued a warning about the dangers of Viberzi, particularly to patients who do not have a gallbladder.

The drug was approved in May 2015. Since then, the FDA has received at least 120 reports of serious pancreatitis linked to the drug. Of those, 76 patients required hospitalization, and two died. Patients can experience symptoms of pancreatitis after just one dose of the drug.

In March, the FDA issued a warning about Viberzi. The drug should not be used by patients who do not have a gallbladder. Additionally, it should not be used by patients with a history of liver problems, pancreas problems or blockage of the gallbladder. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse, severe or chronic constipation, or intestinal obstruction should also not be prescribed Viberzi.
