Two Injured in I-10 Double Big Rig Crash in Coachella

A double big rig crash on a Coachella freeway Friday morning injured two drivers and spilled over 55 gallons of diesel onto the road. The crash, which happened at 5:24 a.m on eastbound I-10 east of Dillon Road, knocked one of the vehicles on its side. Both drivers were hospitalized for moderate injuries.

Diesel fuel leaked down an incline and threatened to spill into a storm drain. Riverside County firefighters worked to contain the spill until a hazmat team arrived around 11:40 a.m. The double big rig crash shut down one lane of the freeway as crews cleared the accident.

Safety violations are a major issue in the trucking industry. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that in 2012 nearly 5% of truck drivers were taken out of service for having too many violations. Additionally, 20% of trucks were taken out of service for excessive violations. That amounts to more than 2.1 million trucks.

“We seem to hear reports of a new big rig crash every week. Isn’t it time the trucking industry revisited its standards to ensure safer roads for us all?” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
