Study Shows Playground Accidents on the Rise

Playgrounds are a great way for kids to get exercise and social interaction—but new research on playground accidents indicates they might not be all that safe. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a study last week showing a 57% increase in ER visits for “sports and recreation head injuries” between 2001 and 2009. A majority of these injuries occurred on playgrounds.

Most of the concussions were caused by children using the swings and monkey bars. Researchers don’t know exactly what is to blame for the steep rise in reported head injuries, but theorize it could have to do with parents becoming more likely to bring their children to the ER when a head injury occurs.

While most concussions and head injures are not life-threatening, they can leave children with lifelong effects.

Symptoms of a concussion can include headaches or pressure in the head, loss of consciousness, confusion, dizziness, ringing in the ears, nausea and slurred speech. Other delayed symptoms include difficulty concentrating and remembering things, irritability, sensitivity to light and noise, inability to sleep and depression.

If your child does injure his head in a playground accident, taking him to the ER for a thorough exam is a good precaution. Remember that concussions sometimes occur subtly and the effects might not be immediately apparent.

“While you don’t want to keep your kids from playing on the playground entirely, it’s a good idea to pay special attention when they are using swings or monkey bars, since that is where most of these head injuries happen,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
